Reading and Phonics
Ten Minutes a Day Could Change Everything:
We teach daily Phonics lessons and follow the Letters and Sounds scheme.
This is the long-term overview of what we cover in each year group and at each phonics phase:
Nursery: teach and secure phase 1 and begin to teach phase 2
Reception: secure phase 2, teach phase 3 and begin to teach phase 4
Year One: secure phase 4 and teach phase 5
Year Two: secure phase 5 and teach phase 6
We know that by teaching Synthetic phonics (word recognition processes) our children will be able to read and decode words and in turn comprehend and understand what they read. We teach a daily Phonics lesson to all children in the EYFS and KS1. At the end of Y1 all children complete a phonics screening check, our results have improved each year and in June 2016 81% of children achieved the expected standard.
Our reading books contains a mix of fully decodable and 85% decodable books. Our reading scheme follows Pearson Phonics Bug and we also use Oxford Reading Tree Traditional Tales, Collins Big Cat Phonics and Dandelion Readers.
